Water, water everywhere. Except in my tomato pot it seems.

just add water

I noticed this morning, when I stopped by the potager to say hi to my vegetables, that the leaves on my tomatoes were looking a bit brown and the fruit was not ripening as quickly as they had been.

I thought I might have been watering them too much, or that the soil in the pot that the tomatoes live in had run out of nutrients.
I was heading into the supermarket that night, and the market in Takapuna has a reasonable gardening section. If not, my garden centre is only a few blocks away. But as a novice gardener, you are confronted by a lot of products and no real idea which one is best.

So I did what any girl should do when she needs advice on her tomatoes. Yes, I rang my Dad.

Let’s just interrupt quickly by saying that Mom is usually the first port of call when it comes to advice. And for any other piece of the garden, that would be the case. But Dad’s advice is what is needed for bbq’ing, scones, carrot cake, 60’s music ….. and tomatoes!

I told him that I would email him a photograph when I got home. And after purchasing some basic fruit and vegetable food that I can make up in water, I took my things home and then took some photos. And then I tested the soil in the pot and in the rest of the garden. Dry! Dry! Even though it had been raining, my efforts to not kill everything by over-watering it meant my tomatoes were now thirsty little buggers.

And then I emailed them to Dad saying : “I think they were dry”

I got a response this morning : “Yes I think you are right, how about that”

Cheeky bugger.

Least the rest of the garden looks great. Its time to start eating my way through it.
