After taking this photograph, I read some more of the manual and discovered that the D300 has more than one AF sensor mode.
Instead of focusing on a single point, I can use a setting that has up to 51 sensors or a setting where the camera chooses. It might be easier to start using one of these higher number settings instead of trying to use one point to get those rhinophores in focus.
