The sun finally arrived – and it stayed all weekend! I love love love the sun, almost as much as I love long weekends.
Ken bought his kids up to Auckland for the Easter break. It was the first time that they had been to my place (let alone stayed a night) so I was a bit worried and panicky and nervous before hand.
With a tiny house and only 2 bedrooms it was more like a camp sleepover but all in all, I think it went alright.
I gave them my rules when they arrived (I hope these were reasonable);
- If you get something out, put it back
- If you break something, let me know
- If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything at all
- Once I’ve shown you were it is, you can help yourself
I figured that I wanted them to make themselves at home but also realise that this is my place and that I didn’t want any whinging or fighting.
They arrived Thursday night after dinner so we just hung out and watched a bit of telly.
Good Friday morning was a gorgeous morning. We ended up down at my lake, Lake Pupuke, where everyone stripped down and jumped in for a swim.
In the evening we headed off to my beach for some sunset photographs. The light was gorgeous – it was a lovely evening.
We went out for lunch on Saturday (partly so Ken and I could plump up the Easter egg stock for Sunday morning) and bought new books – and new shoes for me!
After the kids went to bed, we stayed up thinking of clues to place around my house (with eggs) for the morning.
This is all totally new to me but aside from how cool it would be for them, I love how much effort he puts in to making things fun for them. Yea I am totally biased, but he is a really great Dad.
The Easter bunny visited on Easter Sunday morning. We charged around the house collecting clues and eggs and then divided up the spoils.
After all that excitement, we packed a picnic lunch and headed back to Lake Pupuke. M wanted to swim again – in fact, she had been talking about it all weekend.
Seeing as it was so sunny, and I loved the idea of relaxing at the Lake in the sun, I was all for this! Plus they were due to head home on Sunday and I wanted to delay that as long as possible.
We’d been home for a little while, chilling out.
Those little ratbags had been on a mission to get Ken playing Minecraft. He was engrossed in the last Game of Thrones book and definitely not interested – somehow I got the bug!!
Anyhow, come late afternoon I got my little wish and Ken decided that they would head home the next morning. Yayyy!!
I still needed my 365 photograph for the day so we ran out the door over to Bayswater.
Ranty Tara decided to join us. I had left my Nikon at home. Oh I’d grabbed my lenses, a new compact flash card. But no bloody camera.I was angry, sweary, mad at myself. I got an okay photograph for my project with my iPhone but it wasn’t the photograph that I had in mind for that evening. I had to smack myself inside a couple of times to get over it. I know its silly but I was mad!
We made pita bread burgers and wedges for dinner. Very very yummy and clean plates all around.
All in all, I had such a lovely Easter weekend.
In terms of the first weekend (ever) that I had children to stay with me, I think I worried for nothing – aside from the fact that they are pretty easy to entertain (thanks Xbox, thanks internet), they are really good kids and heaps of fun to be around. Yea I know it would be different to have them around more but as I don’t have my nephews in the same country, I don’t have a lot, or rather any, experience with spending a lot of time around them.
Here’s hoping they didn’t find me too grumpy or bossy!!
And here’s hoping everyone else enjoyed the sun and the chocolate. Gym tomorrow??
