Tip 1. Use Natural Light
Using a flash when photographing your pets could possibly result in red (or demon eyes) and it may scare your animals and end your photo session right there.
Avoid direct sunlight, like us your pets will squint if it is too bright, and you will find your images full of harsh highlights and less detail.
If you are shooting inside, try and get your pet near a large window or sitting in a shaft of sunlight. If there is no window light, try using a lamp.
Outside, the best time is when it is overcast or early morning – or my favourite time is later in the day when the light turns that yummy golden colour.
Natural light brings out the colours in their eyes, the shine and the tones of their coats and can even create a halo effect.
Check to see how the light is falling on your pet and if necessary move yourself – not your pet!
This is not to say that flash photography and additional studio lighting is a bad thing but I will be focusing on my preference – natural lighting.
