… no not Ken and I.  Well at least not just yet.

Thanks to Frozen Planet, a cat (even His Royal Fatness) won’t be my last, or one and only pet.

I wonder if the BBC knew how intensely their documentary, narrated by the one and only David Attenborough, would tug at our heart strings.
It is more than just a show and a hashtag on Twitter and a night when we are all in front of the television – it is a demonstration on how beautiful our planet is and how much we have to lose if we continue the greed and keep fucking it up.

Does this baby seal make you feel bad about not sorting ALL your recycling?

I have a list.  Sure it is basically an imaginery list but if I could, these animals would all be living in my house (or on my property).
And because Ken keeps telling me there is no chance I will have most of them (whilst still sending me links and videos of super cute things), I have ranked them by the reality that I will one day have one …

  • Siberian Husky Puppy – oh yes my blue eyed little friend, one day you will be coming home with me (I just need the fence first).  You just know that Napoleon is going to LOVE having a ‘friend’.

And then there are the completely and totally impractical …

  • Red Panda – not entirely impossible.  I’m sure there is a way for me to distract the keepers at Hamilton Zoo … quick Ness, pop him in your backpack!

But is it totally implausible?  Is owning a zoo or raising and caring for animals a total dream?

The other night we watched We Bought A Zoo – the story of Benjamin Mee and his family.
I should have read the book first however I only found out there was a book after I had seen the movie!  I’m sure there was a bit of creative Hollywood license used but the basics are there.

Benjamin and his family did buy a zoo (Dartmoor Zoological Park in Dartmoor, Devon) and he did throw himself in to restoring that failing zoo, ensuring that the animals were taken care of basically assisting the 6 remaining zoo staff that had been doing it by themselves out of their own pockets.
I really enjoyed the film – Matt Damon, oh I enjoy you more than once you gorgeous man – for the true story that it is based on and for the idea that if you really want to do something to help, no matter how large or how small, all it takes is a bit of effort.

Now to see if the book makes my eyes all misty like the film did.
