This Sunday’s playlist is a culmination of what I have been bouncing around to most of the week (I just took a look at my Last.fm playlist – and although I haven’t scrobbled all the tracks yet – there has been a definite flavour to this week).
One of the first albums I ever owned was Power by Ice-T.
This was NOT an album that my mother appreciated me playing loud. But I loved it. I still do! In fact there is a soft spot in my heart for original gangster rap.
And I mean original – late 80’s / early 90’s …
Power wasn’t the first album that Ice-T put out. And funnily enough Law and Order wasn’t the first time he acted either.
Before his album was out, Ice played a DJ in the movie “Breakin” – which I have actually seen! He got more attention as a rapper than a D-J and then he gave us this little gem.
He also had a part on “Fame”. Yup – Fame.
I’ve had quite a bit of documentation to do this week and yesterday I wrote a (boring) configuration file.
Bopping around in my chair got me through. And it makes me feel totally bad ass to be singing along in my head.
My favourite Ice-T track – it’s got to be “The Syndicate”
For a while, my rap tastes mellowed out a little.
We bounced around to Cypress Hill and the Beastie Boys (who like to think of themselves as gangsters) – and then there came Method Man.
Method Man is one of the more recognisable members of the Wu-Tang Clan>
He has also been putting out solo albums since 1994 – as well as working with Redman. Signed to the Def Jam label – there was this track that I love produced with Busta Rhymes
Now you might wonder what a very very white Kiwi chick likes about gangster rap – well I don’t get caught up in the words.
Its all about the beat and the bass. And when you break it down – these guys are talented!!!
My Top 3 #lastfm Artists: Ice-T (17), Murs (12) & Wu-Tang Clan (4) #weeklymusic http://t.co/vJ0R2iJH
